English for Lawyers (Upper-intermediate)


Entry Requirements/ Participants
This two week language course is intended for lawyers who need to improve their English for their work. Participants are likely to be in a legal practice which involves the use of English to deal with individual or corporate clients, or fellow lawyers, across different legal jurisdictions. It is assumed that participants will have been practising law for at least two years.
An upper intermediate level of English is required. Participants should be able to read English (newspapers, textbooks, journals) relatively easily and be able to understand spoken English with few problems.

Course
Content and Aims
The course aims to give participants the opportunity to extend and activate their legal vocabulary in English; to increase fluency and confidence in using English in professional contexts; and to enable participants to prioritize their own language learning needs with a view to continued English language development after the course. A variety of topics are covered by the course including aspects of: UK and Continental legal systems; case law; company law; contract law and property acquisition.

Course activities will include:
- Role plays of meetings and negotiations
- Giving short presentations on legal topics
- Reading and discussion of legal text, including case reports
- Vocabulary building exercises
There will be guest speakers both from the Law Faculty of the University and from the legal profession.

Approach
The course focuses on activating reading and speaking skills through cooperative task-based work in pairs or small groups. There are opportunities for more individual work, for example in preparing and giving a short talk. Participants are expected to do a certain amount of individual study.

English for Medicine (Intermediate and above )



Entry Requirements/ Participants
This is a course for doctors and medical students who have completed at least three years of medical study. Some knowledge of clinical medicine is assumed. The course is especially recommended for those planning to do courses or clinical attachments in an English-speaking country.
Please note that this course is not suitable for those at elementary level. Students who have enrolled and whose language level is found to be too low will be advised to take the General English course instead.

Course
The course is based on 20 timetabled hours per week – five mornings and three afternoons (see sample timetable).

Aims
The course is designed to help participants develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills in English. It aims to give participants the opportunity to learn specialised vocabulary and expressions, to activate passive vocabulary, to learn the English pronunciation of medical terms and to increase fluency and confidence in using English in professional contexts.

Content
Activities during the course may include:

  • listening to audio and video recorded medical talks and taking notes
  • reading and summarising medical journal articles
  • group discussion of case problems, ethical questions, etc.
  • role play practice of the vocabulary and grammatical structures used in history-taking, clinical examination and case presentation
  • writing case reports and short summaries
  • preparation and presentation of short talks
  • pronunciation practice in the language laboratory
  • working with computerised medical case problems
  • a tutorial at an Edinburgh hospital

Le cours d’Anglais pour Médecins chez Institut Américain d'Anglais Témara a été conçu pour répondre aux demandes spécifiques de médecins qui reçoivent une clientèle anglophone dans leur cabinet. Le cours permet d’étudier et de mettre en pratique des expressions utiles en utilisant des contenus d’une grande qualité visuelle , des activités d’écoute de haute qualité et une grande variété d’exercices et d’activités pour que l’apprentissage et la pratique de l’anglais soient une expérience efficace ainsi pour assister au conférence et séminaires. If you want to mix journalistic training with traditional English skills, this programme is for you. You can choose whether you want journalism to make up one half or one third of your degree, as well as choosing from a wide range of English modules. English for Engineers is an inter-disciplinary language and orientation program for newcomer engineering professionals. It is an intensive communication course that focuses on the language skills needed to practice effectively in our Institute.

Who is the program for?
